Ieuan Crump, a 26-year-old healthcare assistant from Gilfach, Caerphilly county, who faces accusations of sexually assaulting two female patients at a hospital, has stated that one of the alleged victims is “making up” the claims. Mr. Crump denies all nine charges against him, which include three counts of penetration. During proceedings at Cardiff Crown Court, it was heard that one of the patients alleged Mr. Crump questioned her regarding her sex life and the number of individuals she had been intimate with. Mr. Crump refuted that this conversation occurred, stating: “As far as I’m concerned she is making it up, a patient’s personal life is irrelevant.” The patient informed police that Mr. Crump inquired whether her last sexual partner was male or female. Prosecutor Matthew Roberts then asserted: “This was a person you were interested in sexually.” Mr. Crump responded with: “No.” Mr. Roberts further stated that the patient became so distressed that she wished to depart, subsequently being examined by a medical registrar, after which she proceeded to her mother. The court was informed that the patient recounted to the police remembering being touched intimately by Mr. Crump, who was not wearing gloves at the time. Mr. Roberts presented the patient’s account, stating: “Your hands were shaking. She asked if you were ok. You said you had too much caffeine.” He then questioned Mr. Crump: “Did you ever say that?” Mr. Crump’s response was: “No.” It was revealed in court that Mr. Crump created “no entry” signs for rooms within the unit on his day off, an initiative he claimed was inspired by practices on other wards at the hospital. The rooms in question feature doors equipped with a metallic blind that can be lowered to ensure patient privacy during intimate examinations and procedures. Mr. Roberts contended: “There was no need for the signs to be made.” He added: “No one said ‘Ieuan please make the signs’.” The prosecutor then asked: “Was it to dignify patient care or to ensure you could get away with abuse?” He concluded by stating: “You took complete advantage, that’s the truth.” Proceedings are ongoing.
