An individual has been incarcerated following the theft of a designer watch from a man’s wrist in London. Sami Rakene, aged 28, took a Patek Philippe watch from Edward Barnett on 26 October, around 18:00 BST, in the Kilburn High Road area of north-west London. While the precise value of the timepiece remains undisclosed, watches from this high-end brand are known to range in price from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of pounds. Mr. Rakene, residing in Burnt Oak, Edgware, also faced sentencing at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday for additional thefts. These included taking a white suitcase and a backpack from two separate individuals at Paddington station on 7 April and 1 May, respectively. District Judge Nina Tempia imposed a 38-week custodial sentence on him. Regarding the watch theft, she informed Rakene: “You are lucky not to be charged with robbery.” Prosecutor Mewesh Shah informed the court that on 26 October, police officers in an unmarked vehicle observed what they initially perceived as a phone snatch. Ms Shah stated that they saw Rakene, wearing a red baseball cap, running along Kilburn High Road, successfully pursued and apprehended him, and discovered the watch in his trousers. During the mitigation phase, the court was told that Rakene had endured a “traumatic” assault in February of the previous year, which reportedly led him to engage in criminal activities, though he expressed remorse for his conduct. It was also mentioned that he visited Paddington station on 1 May with the intention of stealing items to finance his journey to Scotland, where he aimed to begin a new life. The court was informed of his regret concerning his actions. The judge noted that Rakene was under post-sentence supervision at the time of the watch theft in October. The items within the stolen suitcase had a value of £500, and the backpack along with its contents, which included a disabled badge, was valued at £380. It is understood that the owners of these two items were not able to recover their possessions.
