The family of Shawn Seesahai, who was killed with a machete in a park in Wolverhampton, observed the first anniversary of his passing on his preferred beach in his home country of Anguilla. Mr. Seesahai, aged 19, had traveled from the Caribbean to the United Kingdom to receive treatment for an eye condition and resided in Birmingham. He lost his life in an unprovoked assault in November of the previous year. In September, two boys, currently 13 years old but 12 when the killing occurred, were sentenced to a minimum detention period of eight years and six months. During a sunset ceremony on the beach, Mr. Seesahai’s parents, Maneshwary and Suresh, released balloons in his memory. The two boys, whose identities are protected due to their ages, are the youngest individuals to be convicted of murder since Robert Thompson and Jon Venables, who killed two-year-old James Bulger in 1993. Earlier this month, it was reported that their sentences had been referred to the Court of Appeal following concerns that the tariffs imposed were excessively lenient. Mr. Seesahai had traveled to Wolverhampton with friends when he was attacked with a machete, sustaining blows to his back, legs, and skull, and was also subjected to a beating. His death resulted from a stab wound to the back that pierced his lungs and heart, nearly severing his entire torso. Mrs. Justice Tipples, the judge, stated that while it was not clear which boy delivered the fatal blow, they acted in concert during the assault. Mr. Seesahai had been residing in the UK for six months, having settled in Handsworth, and had aspirations of studying engineering.
