Derbyshire County Council has announced that individuals are now required to register their vehicles to maintain access to its waste disposal sites. The council stated that Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology will be implemented to verify users’ eligibility for its recycling facilities. Initially, vehicles that have not been registered will still be permitted entry, the council clarified, but visitors will receive a reminder to complete registration before their subsequent visit. Carolyn Renwick, the cabinet member responsible for the environment, commented: “Our neighbouring counties have introduced similar schemes and with this change each area will be dealing with and paying for its own waste and recycling.” The council reported a 32% rise in the volume of waste processed at its facilities since 2017. This increase, it noted, amounts to an additional 85,000 tonnes annually, incurring an extra £700,000 to £800,000 in yearly recycling and disposal expenses. Any Derbyshire resident aged 17 or older is permitted to register a maximum of two vehicles for complimentary access to all nine recycling centres within the county. The authority urged individuals to register promptly to “avoid any issues in the future.” For residents registering a van to dispose of household waste, the council specified that re-registration will be necessary for each visit, with access valid for a 24-hour period. This measure, it explained, aims to help “deter traders from using the service for free at the expense of local council tax-payers.” Traders who need to dispose of commercial waste have the option to pay for unlimited visits at designated sites in Ashbourne and Stonegravels. Ms Renwick stated: “This registration scheme will make things fairer and more cost effective for Derbyshire residents. “It’s all part of our efforts to strike the right balance between continuing to provide a good quality service for residents and making the necessary savings.”” A spokesperson for the council reported that 5,000 registrations have been processed since the scheme’s launch on Monday, and requested patience from users experiencing slow website performance due to significant demand.
