An individual received a prison sentence of nearly three years for perpetrating a “vicious and violent attack” amidst public disturbances. Ameer Khalile, aged 25, assaulted his victim by stamping on their head during civil unrest that erupted in Middlesbrough on August 4. Teesside Crown Court heard that Khalile had stated he went out to protect his mosque, believing the local Asian community would be singled out. Judge Richard Clews, in handing down a sentence of two years and 10 months to Khalile, residing at Limerick Avenue, Stockton, stated that the victim had “done nothing wrong” and was “probably attacked because he was white.” The court was informed that approximately 1,000 individuals gathered for a scheduled peaceful demonstration in the town, which rapidly escalated into violence. During the unrest, shops, residences, and commercial establishments sustained damage, bins were ignited, and projectiles were hurled. Additionally, shouts of “take our country back” were audible among the assembled crowd. Testimony presented in court indicated that Khalile was among a group of men who were heard shouting ”white racist scum” as they moved down the street and singled out the victim. Surveillance camera footage presented to the court depicted Khalile stamping on the man’s head, causing him to fall face down into a ditch. The court was also told that Khalile fled the scene and was later observed at the entrance of a pub, attempting to punch an individual and kicking the door. His identification occurred in the subsequent weeks, following a public appeal issued by law enforcement. Cleveland Police apprehended Khalile at his residence during raids conducted on August 28. Tom Bennett, representing the defense, stated that racial tensions had disseminated nationwide, having been “whipped up by far right extremists.” “”He was caught up in the events that followed and is now remorseful,” Bennett added. Khalile admitted guilt to charges of violent disorder and attempted grievous bodily harm with intent.
