A community program aimed at encouraging interaction among residents in a Worcestershire town is now expanding its reach into local coffee establishments. Four cafes situated in Malvern are now providing “Happy to Chat” tables, signaling to patrons that those seated there are receptive to social engagement. This new pilot initiative follows the successful introduction of “Happy to Chat” benches in the town’s parks, which commenced in April. The Malvern Town Council indicated its intention to help alleviate loneliness, particularly during the upcoming Christmas period. An increasing number of local authorities across the United Kingdom are participating in the “Happy to Chat” scheme. Councillor Julie MacLusky, who is spearheading the Malvern initiative, stated: “We are thrilled to be expanding the Happy to Chat initiative to include a wider audience of Malvern.” She further added, “As a council it is important that we take the appropriate steps in pro-actively addressing the epidemic of loneliness, something the Happy to Chat initiative is critical in doing.” The initial phase of the pilot includes four participating cafes: Faun, Abbey Road Coffee, Book and Cup Cafe at Malvern Library, and The Cube.
