Despite their ability to score, Leicester City has not consistently secured victories since rejoining the Premier League this season. While newly promoted teams often face difficulties finding the net, the Foxes successfully scored in each of their initial 10 league matches. This scoring run concluded against Manchester United, and despite an impressive goalscoring record, Leicester has achieved only two wins. This limited success stems from defensive challenges that have counteracted their offensive capabilities. Leicester has allowed 21 goals, ranking as the fourth highest in the league, a number that might have been greater without Mads Hermansen’s exceptional saves. Furthermore, only two teams have a higher expected goals against (xGA) total than Leicester’s 20. Individual errors have been a persistent issue for Leicester, with responsibility extending beyond the defensive line. The midfield pivot has demonstrated poor marking, frequently losing track of opponents. Although players bear some accountability, Steve Cooper has not managed to effectively execute his tactical plans during matches. The team has permitted 194 shots from opponents (the second highest in the league), 114 passes into their penalty area (third highest), and 367 touches in the penalty area (third highest). Moreover, the manager has not yet resolved Leicester’s defensive weaknesses in wide zones. Ricardo Pereira was introduced into the starting eleven to strengthen the defense, but the full-back’s injury has left the manager relying on his initial defensive duo of James Justin and Victor Kristiansen. For Leicester, avoiding relegation this season would be deemed a successful outcome, and the team is currently positioned to achieve this, holding 15th place in the league. Nevertheless, there is an indication that the team’s performance could be improved. Cooper has not succeeded in maximizing the potential of this skilled young Foxes squad, and additional uninspired losses might foreshadow the conclusion of his brief tenure as manager.
