Portuguese football journalist Jose Delgado has described Sporting Lisbon manager Ruben Amorim as “special” and “diplomatic.” Reports indicate that Manchester United is currently in discussions regarding the potential appointment of the 39-year-old coach to succeed Erik ten Hag, who was dismissed on Monday. Amorim is a highly esteemed coach who has previously been associated with other managerial positions within the Premier League. Delgado conveyed to BBC Radio 5 Live that, “Since Jose Mourinho, he is the most exciting Portuguese coach and we have had many, many good coaches.” He further stated, “Amorim is special. Because of being special, only after 13 games in the first division, Sporting paid 10m euros to Braga to have him. Sporting was struggling, they had many problems and people asked Amorim if it was not a big risk he was taking.” Delgado added that, “But things went very right in Sporting. They won two leagues, three League Cups and one Super Cup and made a fantastic team.” He also noted, “Every year the team is stronger with more ideas and his leadership is very, very good. Not in the Mourinho style, Amorim is more diplomatic. He goes to the problems and speaks about them openly and that gives him success.” Should the Portuguese coach assume leadership at United, he would inherit a squad that includes several players acquired during Ten Hag’s tenure. Samuel Luckhurst, the chief Manchester United reporter for the Manchester Evening News, commented, “If he has any sense he will ask for the squad to be gutted.” Luckhurst continued, “Because that was another mistake that they made in the summer, it was another Dutch-centric transfer window.” He concluded by stating, “You don’t have to be a sporting director, manager or board member to know that there was no sense in just signing players in the manager’s image. United needed to become a much more sophisticated operation.”
