West Midlands Mayor Richard Parker has conveyed his profound admiration for the quality of candidates applying for commissioner positions aimed at enhancing road safety within the region. One of the two designated roles is slated for appointment in the upcoming new year, following hundreds of individuals having already submitted their applications to join the mayor’s “council of experts.” These experts will collaborate with local councils, police forces, and teams from the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA), a response to a series of road fatalities that occurred during the summer months. Parker stated: “The calibre of applicants is inspiring.” He added, “We’ve seen expertise from a range of fields, from transport and planning to public health and community engagement.” He concluded by saying, “It really reminded me of just how much talent we have in this region.” A commissioner dedicated to road safety and another focused on active travel will be assigned the responsibility of tackling reckless driving across the West Midlands. They are scheduled to cooperate with the newly established transport task force, which will grant them direct access to the authority’s board. Each commissioner is expected to commit one day per week to their duties and will receive a payment of £10,000 – approximately £200 daily – for their contributions. “I’ve been blown away by the response – over 300 applications from talented people who want to work together to deliver change across the West Midlands,” Parker remarked. Individuals selected for the task forces, which will constitute Parker’s council of experts, are intended to concentrate on achieving his key objectives concerning jobs, homes, journeys, and growth for all residents. When the recruitment initiative commenced, the mayor articulated his expectation that these individuals would not only offer advice on optimal implementation but also critically assess existing policies and propose remedies for current challenges. “We’re in the final stages of the selection process, and I’m looking forward to introducing the successful candidates early in the new year.” He further commented, “It’s going to be a real game changer because I know they will bring fresh ideas and real energy to their roles.” For updates from BBC Wolverhampton & Black Country, engage with their content on BBC Sounds, Facebook, X, and Instagram.
