Durham Cathedral has stated its initiative to permit dogs within its premises reflects an adaptation to contemporary trends. The cathedral commenced allowing pet dogs on a trial basis starting November 18, with the trial scheduled to conclude on March 31. Andrew Usher, the chief visitor officer, indicated that this policy change aims to ensure everyone “feel welcome.” Hazel Isgate, who relocated to Durham three years prior, reported taking her dog, Wilson, to the church the previous week, describing the experience as “just lovely to do together at long last.” Ms. Isgate recounted visiting the cathedral multiple times with her husband, who previously had to remain outside during her visits to the church. She explained, “But then you feel guilty, so you are rushing around because somebody is stood outside,” adding, “This enables you to all go in together and enjoy it together.” Mr. Usher reported that the church has observed approximately 10 to 15 dogs daily since the commencement of the trial. He also noted that over half of English cathedrals currently permit dogs, though prominent cathedrals such as St Paul’s in London and York Minster do not. However, these, like Durham Cathedral, have historically allowed service dogs. He elaborated that the cathedral initiated this change for multiple reasons, one being its location at the terminus of several Northern Saint Trails. Individuals frequently completed these trails to the church with their dogs but were then prohibited from bringing their pets indoors, he stated. A further justification for permitting dogs was, according to him, a simple adaptation to contemporary societal shifts. He remarked, “There is a lot of tradition with churches, cathedrals [and] the way people behave when they come into them has changed as society as changed… once upon a time people would not wear a hat when they came into a cathedral.” Dogs are permitted to attend any church service but remain barred from certain designated areas. He indicated that a decision regarding permanent dog access is premature, but Mr. Usher confirmed that the team has gathered “really good feedback.” He added, “Concerns we might have had have not materialised yet.” Post navigation Tetbury Retailers Promote ‘Colour Thursday’ as Alternative to Black Friday Manchester United Player Diogo Dalot Makes Unannounced Visit to Homeless Shelter
