Striker Anthony Gordon’s availability for England is uncertain following his departure from Newcastle’s match against Nottingham Forest. The 23-year-old player exited the game at the City Ground with a hip complaint, 10 minutes before full-time, in a match where the Magpies secured a 3-1 comeback win. Gordon, possessing seven England caps, had been named in Lee Carsley’s squad for the upcoming Nations League fixtures against Greece and Ireland this month; however, his condition will now undergo evaluation. Manager Eddie Howe commented: “I’d say because he has come off, yes [a doubt for England].” He added, “It looks like a similar problem to one he had a few weeks ago with his hip. We hope it’s not serious.” Harvey Barnes, who substituted Gordon, netted Newcastle’s third goal just three minutes after entering the field. Prior to this, Alexander Isak and Joelinton had already scored to reverse the scoreline. Murillo’s header in the first half initially put Forest ahead, but Newcastle responded to climb to eighth position, one point adrift of third-placed Forest. Howe specifically commended Joelinton. He remarked, following the Brazil international’s initial goal since the season’s commencement: “He’s turned into a beast, a machine, he is someone you put on the pitch and you know what you are going to get.” He continued, “He has got those mental qualities. Joe deserves the credit, not us, it’s the player who has to commit to what you ask him to do. “I want more from him, I think he can get more goals. Look at the goals he has scored this season, it’s a player with real finishing abilities.” This marked the Magpies’ third consecutive victory across all competitions, following triumphs against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup and Arsenal last week. Howe further stated: “We knew the importance of today, we didn’t want it to be a false dawn. The challenge for the players was to come here against a team in good form.”
