Authorities in Guernsey have announced they are seeking a contractor to undertake the inspection and replacement of alarm systems within States houses. The States of Guernsey Housing further specified that the chosen contractor will also be responsible for installing additional smoke alarms in the lounge areas of these States-owned properties. The department stated that only electrical contractors holding approval from either the National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contracting, the Electrical Contractors’ Association, or the National Association of Professional Inspectors & Testers will be considered for the work. Housing indicated that the properties are equipped with a mix of “some or all” mains-connected Aico alarms. These installations typically comprise a smoke alarm in the hall and landing, a heat alarm in the kitchen, a carbon monoxide (CO) alarm in the lounge or any room containing a gas or solid fuel burning appliance, and potentially smoke alarms in bedrooms within flats. The department clarified, stating: “Each year Housing identifies which alarms are due for replacement and compiles a work schedule. This work is undertaken as part of a separate Alarm Replacement contract.” Housing confirmed that the deadline for responses is January 2025.
