On Monday, hundreds of poppy wreaths are scheduled to arrive at London Paddington’s war memorial via train, in preparation for a Remembrance Day service. These wreaths will be loaded onto GWR’s early morning and overnight trains from 90 stations across the route, encompassing areas such as Bristol, Somerset, Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, Devon, and Cornwall. Once at Paddington, the wreaths will be placed at the memorial situated on Platform 1, preceding a service scheduled for 10:45 GMT. Additionally, the station will feature a display comprising 22,442 cascading poppy petals, which have been repurposed from wreaths gathered during prior ceremonies. Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) volunteers, many of whom are former service personnel, will be responsible for placing the poppies on the trains. This year marks the charity’s 200th anniversary. Simon Jeffery, a coxswain at Plymouth lifeboat station, and Tony Rendle, a mechanic at Penlee lifeboat station, both military veterans from the RNLI, are set to accompany the wreaths and participate in the Paddington service. They will be accompanied by Gaynor Williams, an RNLI education and water safety volunteer, who organized a knitathon to produce a substantial knitted poppy wreath. Margot Billinge, daughter of the late D-Day veteran and Normandy Memorial Trust fundraising hero Harry Billinge MBE, who died in 2022, is also expected to attend the service. Ms. Billinge plans to journey from her residence in St Austell, Cornwall, to welcome the train dedicated to her father upon its arrival at Platform 1. Richard Rowland, GWR’s operations director, commented that “it promises to be another poignant occasion at London Paddington”. Peter Sparkes, the RNLI’s chief executive, stated that the charity felt “deeply honoured” by its participation this year. He further explained, “The wreaths placed onboard will represent our RNLI communities who save lives at sea, honouring those crew who have made the ultimate sacrifice over the past 200 years of the RNLI, including World War One and Two”.
