The popular heritage tram service in a seaside town has been suspended. Blackpool Transport Services stated that running the older trams concurrently with the town’s modern fleet presented growing difficulties. According to a statement published on the company’s website, general safety and maintenance concerns impeded the effective operation of the service. The modern trams are currently undergoing installation of new safety systems, which the company anticipates will enhance their operational efficiency. The statement elaborated that operating the heritage trams alongside the modern fleet led to “issues such as depot space, tram movements, general safety and maintenance conflicts making it difficult to continue running the service effectively”. It further added: “The heritage trams are a cherished part of Blackpool’s history, and we fully recognise their importance to the community, however, ensuring the ongoing safety and sustainability of the service has become increasingly complex.” The company also noted that the decision “was not taken lightly” and provided a chance to re-evaluate the function of the heritage tram service, which has operated since 2011 within a “modernised and safe tramway network”. Blackpool Transport Services affirmed its commitment to discovering “innovative opportunities to honour and showcase Blackpool’s tramway history”.
