A father from Bradford has been sentenced to an eight-year jail term following his actions of squeezing and shaking his newborn infant, which resulted in numerous fractured ribs and cerebral bleeding. The individual, whose name is being withheld to safeguard the child’s identity, contacted emergency services via 999 in early 2022, reporting that the baby was stiff and experiencing respiratory problems. On Friday, Prosecutor Michael Smith informed Bradford Crown Court that prompt aid was dispatched to the residence, and paramedics noted concerns regarding bruising observed on the infant’s body. Upon the baby’s examination at the hospital, medical professionals identified 11 distinct areas of physical harm, consistent with “very forceful gripping”. Furthermore, a CT scan disclosed “bruising and bleeding on the brain,” indicating a substantial volume of blood present on the left cerebral hemisphere. Mr. Smith stated that this injury was unequivocally a consequence of a violent shaking event. A medical doctor determined that the child had endured “multiple episodes of abuse trauma” and sustained a minimum of 17 rib fractures affecting both sides of the chest. Additionally, the child had experienced fractures to both collarbones. During later court proceedings, it was revealed that the defendant confessed to inflicting the injuries on two distinct occasions. Mr. Smith specified that the initial incident entailed “forceful squeezing,” while the second involved shaking the infant. The defendant, aged in his 30s, entered a guilty plea last month to two counts of intentionally inflicting grievous bodily harm, and his barrister, Rebecca Randall, stated that he attended court aware that he would receive a substantial prison term. She conveyed that the defendant expressed genuine regret for his conduct and acknowledged that he would bear the consequences for the remainder of his life. The court was informed that the child has since been evaluated and is meeting all its developmental milestones to date, residing with its mother. Miss Randall mentioned that her client was experiencing immense stress at the time of the incidents. “He recognises that what he did was awfully wrong,” she further stated. Judge Colin Burn commented that the cerebral injuries were highly severe and that the defendant had applied such force that the exceptionally pliable bones of a newborn infant had fractured. He noted that the baby was in a “very critical” state when the ambulance was summoned, and the injuries were serious. The judge characterized the defendant’s conduct on both occasions as indicative of someone experiencing a total loss of control. He observed that the small infant was clearly extremely vulnerable, and the offense involved a father, in a position of trust, perpetrating a violent assault against his newborn child.
