The Wombats have expressed their enthusiasm, stating they were “so excited” to be confirmed as headliners for the inaugural night of the On The Waterfront festival, returning “back where it all began.” The Liverpool-based trio is scheduled to lead the four-day event at the city’s Pier Head on June 19, in what is being promoted as the band’s “biggest hometown show to date.” On June 19, Pale Waves and Sawyer Hill will join The Wombats, with additional performers yet to be announced by the organizers. The festival’s other main acts include Wolfe Tones on June 20, followed by the Cream Classical Ibiza 50-piece Kaleidoscope Orchestra on June 21, and Sting, who will close the final evening on June 22. The indie rock group, composed of frontman Matthew ‘Murph’ Murphy, Tord Overland Knudsen, and Dan Haggis, first met as teenagers while studying at the Liverpool Institute of Performing Art before their emergence onto the music scene in 2007. Nearly two decades later, they are preparing to release their sixth album, Oh! The Ocean, in February. This release will precede a UK tour, which will culminate with their headlining performance at On the Waterfront. Drummer Dan Haggis commented: “We’re so excited to announce that we’re playing a huge hometown show, back where it all began.” He added, “The Mersey and Liver Buildings will provide the backdrop, we’ll provide the tunes.” Haggis further stated that the event would be a “special night,” featuring new tracks from their forthcoming album “and of course a load of old bangers.” The On the Waterfront festival is scheduled to take place at Liverpool’s Pier Head from June 19-22, 2025.
