East Suffolk Council has announced that measures have been implemented to seal gaps along a promenade at a coastal resort, aiming to prevent additional concrete slabs from giving way. Two rectangular sections of the seafront walkway in Southwold, Suffolk, have already caved in due to erosion and severe weather conditions. The council, which holds ownership of the promenade, stated that engineers from its coastal management division will conduct regular inspections throughout the Christmas and New Year period. It further noted that the Water Management Alliance, the authority’s designated contractor for repairs and maintenance, has sealed existing gaps to mitigate further erosion. On December 19, a segment of the promenade situated north of Southwold Pier was cordoned off after a slab collapsed inward, creating a void. An inquiry was initiated to ascertain the cause of this collapse. However, the council reported that another section of the promenade subsequently gave way either later that same day or overnight. A spokesperson for the authority commented: “For safety, the cordon remains in place and we would remind people to take extra care in this area and to take notice of signage and fencing.” While repairs to the promenade wall were initially scheduled for the upcoming year, recent weather events have accelerated erosion damage, which is believed to be the cause of the collapse. The coastal management team is collaborating with its contractors and consenting organizations to expedite these essential works.
