An act of vandalism has resulted in damage valued at hundreds of pounds, following the removal of decorations from a Christmas tree. The Sea Road and Fulwell Traders Association, along with staff from Fulwell Library, had collectively raised £1,500 for the illumination and adornment of the village’s “living” tree, situated in Dene Lane. Nevertheless, local residents expressed dismay upon finding that the tree’s branches had been damaged, the wires connected to the lights severed, and decorations forcibly removed and scattered across the grass. Fulwell councillor, Michael Hartnack, characterized the vandals as “mindless” and stated they had “destroyed” the community’s preparations for Christmas. A spokesperson for Northumbria Police issued an appeal for anyone possessing information concerning the criminal damage to contact them. Mr. Hartnack suspects that two men removed the lights from the tree shortly before midnight on Thursday. He stated, “We had a couple of hundred people here celebrating Christmas and now we’ve had two mindless vandals who’ve come here late last night and done this.” He added, “I’ve had a number of phone calls and people are absolutely disgusted because it’s right next to a primary school.” Richard Beck, from Fulwell Community Library, noted that the tree had not garnered universal popularity. He commented, “It cost a lot of money, we brought it over from Italy for £3,500 but it’s one we’ll keep and it will grow.” Beck further stated, “The decorations cost the traders and the library a lot of money but we just wanted to put a nice show on for the children. It’s not the first time it’s been damaged, I’m just sick to death of the whole thing.”
