In west London, a trading standards operation has resulted in the confiscation of counterfeit Paddington Bear merchandise, with an estimated retail value exceeding £15,000. Nearly 2,000 counterfeit items were confiscated from retail establishments in Notting Hill, a location notable for being a filming site for parts of the Paddington Bear film franchise. From five shops situated on Earl’s Court Road, items such as magnets, bags, shot glasses, packs of playing cards, thimbles, and spoon rests were recovered. The Kensington and Chelsea Council reported that an operation on Portobello Road led to the recovery of 1,500 fake items, among them tote bags individually priced at £10. The council indicated a significant increase in the unlawful sale of counterfeit goods within the borough, preceding the upcoming release of the newest film in the franchise, Paddington in Peru. Spokesperson Cem Kemahli stated: “Our trading standards team are ‘bearing down’ and taking swift action against sellers who are undermining legitimate businesses in our borough”. Furthermore, the council confirmed that the seized items are slated for destruction, and the proprietors of the businesses involved will be subject to formal proceedings.
