The police have issued an appeal for witnesses regarding the sexual assault of a young woman, which occurred in Londonderry’s Bank Place area over the weekend. According to detectives, the victim, described as being in her late teens, experienced trauma and extreme distress as a result of the incident, and specialist officers are providing ongoing support. This incident took place during the early hours of Saturday morning, preceding a distinct sexual assault involving a woman in her 50s that occurred on Sunday in the city’s Lecky Road area. In response, police have committed to deploying an increased number of uniformed and plain-clothes officers for patrols across the city throughout the busy Halloween period. The description of the suspect is a white male, estimated to be 5′ 10″ tall, with a medium to large build. He was reportedly wearing white trainers, dark jeans, and a dark T-shirt featuring some form of marking or logo on its back. Authorities have stated that they are reviewing CCTV footage from the Bank Place vicinity and have also issued a direct appeal to anyone who might have interacted with the suspect or provided assistance to the victim. They added, “To motorists, including any taxi drivers, if you have any dash cam footage from this area at this time, we are keen to hear from you.” Ch Supt Gillian Kearney, the Area Commander for Derry City and Strabane, expressed her intention to reassure the public, stating that officers “will be visible in communities, with an increased presence ahead of Halloween.” She further elaborated, “Not only will the public see officers on the ground in uniform, but we will have officers in plain clothes, on patrol working to spot predatory behaviour in bars, nightclubs and on our streets.” “We’re there to identify people who are displaying predatory behaviours including sexual harassment, inappropriate touching and loitering,” she concluded.
