Police officials have announced that a winter campaign targeting poorly maintained vehicles aims to “raise standards and save lives”. Officers conducting random automobile checks across the island have discovered that approximately 46% of the vehicles inspected thus far contained at least one defect. The Isle of Man Constabulary is advising motorists to check their wiper blades, lights, batteries, and tyres, and to ensure their vehicle tax, driving licence, and insurance are current. Sergeant Elliot Butler of the Roads Policing Unit stated: “We’re not here to punish people, but we’ve no hesitation in taking cars that could cause harm off the road.” These annual roadside inspections are conducted in collaboration with the Department of Infrastructure and Customs officers, who also examine vehicles for the use of illegal fuels. The force is additionally focused on addressing drivers involved in drug and drink driving, speeding, failing to wear a seatbelt, using mobile phones, or driving without due care and attention – actions collectively referred to as the “fatal five” offences. During the first three rounds of inspections, 108 vehicles were stopped, and 48 drivers were issued with notices, which permit them to rectify minor defects within seven days without incurring further penalties. Two cars have been impounded, and a tractor loader was also removed from the road as part of the operation due to having been driven without tax for seven years. Figures presented in the chief constable’s most recent annual report indicated that three individuals died and 64 people sustained serious injuries in collisions on Manx roads between April 2023 and March 2024. Sergeant Butler remarked: “Defective vehicles and the fatal five offences do lead to fatalities. Part of our job is to break that bad news to families, if we can do that just one less time a year, it’s worthwhile.” The BBC Isle of Man can be followed on Facebook and X, and story ideas may be submitted to IsleofMan@bbc.co.uk.
