Enzo Maresca states Chelsea has the potential to dominate English football once more. Chelsea’s manager, Enzo Maresca, a 44-year-old Italian, has expressed his belief that the club is capable of “dominating” the Premier League within the coming five to 10 years. Despite Chelsea currently holding third place in the league standings, matching Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal in both points and goal difference, Maresca has consistently downplayed his team’s prospects for winning the title this season. On Sunday, Chelsea surpassed reigning champions Manchester City in the standings following a decisive 3-0 victory against Aston Villa at home, though they remain nine points behind current league leaders Liverpool. Nevertheless, Maresca has tempered expectations regarding Chelsea’s immediate capacity to contend for championships, notwithstanding the substantial expenditures made across several transfer windows under the ownership of Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital. Since the Clearlake takeover, Chelsea’s spending has exceeded £1.5bn, primarily invested in younger players secured on extended contracts, a sum partially offset by significant player sales. Players such as Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo, and Nicolas Jackson are reaching their peak performance, complementing the significant influence Cole Palmer has demonstrated over the last 18 months. However, Maresca attributes the team’s likely failure to secure the title this season to the inexperience of his squad, which has an average age of just over 23. Maresca stated, “We’re not in the title race. We are not, in my opinion.” Prior to Wednesday’s Premier League fixture against Southampton, Maresca further commented: “What I said to the owners and the sporting directors the first time I met them, because of the age, and because of how good the squad is, for me Chelsea in the next five to 10 years will be one of the teams, or the team, that is going to dominate English football.” He continued, “This is what I said this to the club the first time I met them. No matter who will be the manager, for the next five or 10 years, because of the age, the squad, you can dominate English football, and I still think exactly the same.” Regarding objectives, Maresca noted, “In terms of a target they didn’t ask me for any target, only to try to build something important for the next years. I think we are [heading] in the right direction.” He also mentioned his personal goals: “In terms of a personal target, I know you struggle to believe but I’m not focused on [the] end of season, next season, because it’s not real.” Enzo Maresca conveyed enthusiasm for the team assembled at Stamford Bridge. Under their American ownership, Chelsea concluded their first two seasons in 12th and sixth place respectively, failing to secure any trophies; however, the club has started to show stability and progress under Maresca’s management. Separately, Maresca did not provide a precise recovery timeframe for Wesley Fofana’s recent hamstring injury, stating only that the 23-year-old centre-back, along with captain Reece James, would be sidelined for “weeks.”
