Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has urged the club’s supporters to postpone expressing their dissatisfaction with his tactical decisions until after matches, explaining that voicing complaints “in the moment” can be detrimental to the team. The Newcastle boss was questioned by the media about midfielder Sandro Tonali, who has been replaced in Newcastle’s two most recent games against Brighton and Chelsea. These substitutions were met with audible disapproval from some segments of the Newcastle fanbase present in the stadium. In Tuesday’s news conference, Howe stated, “Firstly, I love that the supporters regard Sandro in the highest esteem as I do,” and continued, “The only thing I would ask is that any frustrations towards me are reflected after the match, rather than in the moment. That makes it difficult for the players coming onto the pitch. Not that it should affect their performance, but it creates an element of doubt.” Howe elaborated on the challenging decision he faces in midfield, having “three outstanding players starting the game.” He explained that when the team is losing, he endeavors to make changes he believes will be helpful, without waiting too long. He also noted that there is a perception that a player given only ten minutes might not truly “get into the game and find their rhythm,” emphasizing the delicate balance required. To implement these changes, Howe indicated he must substitute either a wide player, a midfield player, or both. He described himself as a manager who prefers to make early changes, citing his “experience and history behind that.” He added, “When you look at our team, it’s a difficult decision. Ultimately, I’ve judged it off goals and creativity and trying to get as many of them [attacking] players in the team as I can.” Assessing the team’s current state, Howe remarked, “Looking at the team, I don’t see anything that’s drastically wrong.” However, he conceded that “the confidence may be beginning to be an issue” and mentioned, “We had a few positional issues on Sunday which we will discuss with the players.”
