An 18-year-old male driver has died subsequent to his vehicle colliding with a wall amidst a police pursuit within Sheffield city centre. South Yorkshire Police reported that the individual, operating a black Ford Fiesta, responded to the sight of officers on Hyde Park Walk by “attempted to flee the scene” around 13:00 GMT on Monday. A spokesperson for the force stated that the vehicle, suspected of being stolen, subsequently struck a wall on East Bank Road following a brief police chase. The man was transported to a hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Subsequent to the collision, the police force initiated a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct. East Bank Road was temporarily closed for officers to carry out investigative procedures but has since been made accessible again. Authorities issued an appeal for individuals possessing information regarding the incident, or dashcam or CCTV footage from the location around the time of the collision, to come forward. The spokesperson added that they were especially keen to speak with anyone who might have been present in the City Road, Park Grange Road, Spring Lane, and Northern Avenue vicinities during the chase.
