Fremington, a village situated in north Devon, is commemorating Remembrance Day with an exhibition featuring over 2,500 knitted poppies. The village green has been adorned with these poppies, which were crafted by both seasoned knitters and individuals new to the craft. The assembly of poppies commenced several years ago, initiated by two local women, and has since expanded. Frank Biederman, Chair of the Fremington and District Community Group, stated that the poppies are arranged in diverse configurations and “in different colours to represent the different groups of people and animals who made the ultimate sacrifice”. The collection’s inception is attributed to two local women, identified solely as Maggie and Biddy, both of whom continue their involvement. Participants have dedicated their personal time to knitting the poppies before convening to assemble the decorative display. Sandra Randall, a knitter involved in the project, commented: “We have had ladies’ wine nights to sew them on to the netting.” She further remarked: “It’s been good fun.” The collective has been encouraging villagers to commence learning to knit presently, with the aim of contributing to the poppy display in the upcoming year.
