A popular family game during the festive season will be brought to life on a grand scale across Liverpool city centre in the lead-up to Christmas. As a monumental adaptation of the Elf on the Shelf game, a 15ft (4.5m) rendition of the character is set to appear at various sites from December 1 to 24. This Liverpool-themed elf, named ‘R’Elf’, will be moved nightly to different areas within the city, with visitors encouraged to locate it each morning. The game, which originated from the 2005 picture book titled The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition, has achieved global recognition as a beloved yuletide custom where Santa’s elves are depicted visiting families daily throughout the holiday period. Leanne Wilks, from the Liverpool BID Company, which is organising the event, commented: “Liverpool loves a spectacle so as soon as we saw the giant The Elf on the Shelf we just had to get involved. “This is going to be full of fun and joy and we want to be able to spread Christmas cheer with this larger-than-life game of hide-and-seek this December,” she added. The elf is scheduled to be positioned on buildings throughout the city, including those on Old Hall Street, Hope Street, and along the Waterfront to Lime Street. On Saturday mornings, the elf will settle into a new location for the weekend, before relocating to a different spot to be discovered on Monday. The character is a collaborative creation by prop and puppet-maker Jenny Simmons, Liverpool BID Company, The Lumistella Company’s official The Elf on the Shelf team, and Rocket Licensing. Daily hints regarding the elf’s whereabouts will be made available on the BID’s social media channels.
