In Alderley, situated near Wotton-under-Edge, Jane Rhys and Jane Newman have created an entirely knitted and embroidered wartime scene. It depicts a World War One soldier, equipped with a helmet, rifle, and backpack, standing in a field of poppies against a somber backdrop of shelled buildings and leafless trees. The battlefield is criss-crossed by barbed wire and surrounded by the famous words from Laurence Binyon’s poem “For the Fallen”. BBC Gloucestershire conducted a visit to Chavenage House in Tetbury this week. The property is featured in the recently released star-studded series “Rivals” on the streaming service Disney+. The series is based on the book by Cotswolds author Dame Jilly Cooper. Separately, an entire street in Sharpness, Dock Road, was sold at auction for £2.5m this week. The Canal and Rivers Trust facilitated the sale to generate funds for the charity. For updates, follow BBC Gloucestershire on Facebook, X, and Instagram.
