Burton Albion’s interim manager, Tom Hounsell, stated that his team recognized the significance of their FA Cup second-round match against non-league Tamworth and emphasized the need for each player to “individually reflect” on their performance. This comes as Burton sits at the bottom of League One, facing an eight-point deficit to avoid relegation. The Brewers, who are currently last in League One, suffered a penalty shootout defeat to the National League team, Tamworth, marking a significant upset in the competition and deepening the challenges of their current season. Speaking to BBC Radio Derby, Hounsell remarked, “There’s not many answers I can give them – they need to realise when they play for this football club they have to work unbelievably hard and that has to transcend into results.” He added, “It’s important the players individually reflect on what’s happened and whatever frustrations they have, they have to get them out of the system.” Hounsell assumed temporary leadership on 23 October after Mark Robinson’s dismissal, but has yet to significantly improve the team’s fortunes, securing only one victory in five league fixtures. His sole other wins have occurred in cup tournaments: the FA Cup first round against non-league Scarborough Athletic, and a match at Northampton Town in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy. After the home loss to Staffordshire rivals Tamworth, captain Elliot Ward called for “hard truths” to be addressed and expressed doubts about the dedication of some of his fellow players. However, Hounsell firmly asserted that their unexpected elimination was not due to overconfidence. He stated, “I have no questions about that whatsoever – the players understood the gravity of the game.” He further explained, “It was drilled into them by myself and they know what it means to put on the shirt – particularly in this game.” He continued, “Any moment they put on the badge, there is a certain amount of pride and determination that is synonymous with not only their own individual performance but also the team performance.” Hounsell added, “We haven’t given the fans the result they deserve and we apologise for that but we have to stick together in these moments.” He concluded this thought by saying, “We’ve got games coming thick and fast and we’re in this together and we have to try to move forward together.” This recent defeat for Burton is expected to fuel speculation regarding the duration of Hounsell’s temporary tenure. The 29-year-old manager indicated he anticipates leading the team for Wednesday’s away match against Peterborough “as far as I’m aware,” but lacks certainty about his future beyond that. “I don’t think that’s my decision,” he stated. “I’m here to work hard every day for this football club and I’ll carry on doing that in whatever capacity is deemed appropriate.” He further commented, “It’s important that people take stock, reflect and strategise about what we need moving forward. “It’s important those decisions are made collectively and we do that in an informed position.”
