An individual has been brought before a court, facing charges related to the sexual assault of a female in Londonderry over the past weekend. Emmett Deehan, aged 32, with no permanent residence, participated in proceedings at Londonderry Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday through a videolink connection. The charges against him include sexual assault and inflicting grievous bodily harm. Law enforcement officials had previously reported that a woman in her fifties suffered severe facial injuries during a sexual assault that occurred in the Lecky Road vicinity of the city during the early hours of Sunday. The defendant’s only verbal contributions were to verify his name and date of birth, and upon being questioned about his comprehension of the charges, he responded: “Yes.” A police constable informed the court of his belief that he could establish a link between the defendant and the accusations. Counsel representing the accused stated that the principal evidence in the proceedings at this point consisted of footage from a doorbell camera. The solicitor conveyed that his client refuted being the individual depicted in the aforementioned footage and emphasized that forensic evidence would be “paramount in establishing guilt in this case”. He further indicated that it could be “some time” before such evidence becomes accessible. The legal representative informed the court that no request for bail was being submitted at this juncture due to the present unavailability of an appropriate address. Mr. Deehan has been ordered to remain in custody and is scheduled to reappear in court during the following month.
