Derby City Council is proposing an expansion in the availability of special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) places at one of its educational institutions. The authority indicated that the number of SEND places at Kingsmead School should be raised from 110 to 180, citing significant demand. Located in Alvaston, the school caters to pupils experiencing social, emotional, and mental health difficulties. A formal report detailing this proposal is scheduled for presentation to the city council’s cabinet on 13 November. According to council leadership, providing SEND places within the city limits is more cost-effective than sending children to schools situated outside the area. Data indicates potential annual savings of up to £1.9 million, as places at schools outside the city are reported to cost “more than double.” During the 2023-24 financial year, the council allocated over £18 million to out-of-area placements, a consequence of insufficient local provision. Should the plan receive approval, Kingsmead School’s expansion will be contingent upon Castle School, its affiliated centre, fully relocating to its new premises. The council sanctioned the acquisition of a new building in August, but its full operational status is not anticipated until September 2025.
