The trust operating the school has announced that students who were involved in a bus collision with a lorry in Leicestershire, described as “upsetting,” will receive support upon their return to lessons. This incident occurred on Wednesday on the A46, close to Syston, while the bus was transporting students from St Paul’s Catholic School in Leicester for an educational excursion. According to police statements, ten schoolchildren were transported to the hospital as a precautionary measure, having sustained minor injuries in the crash, which took place around 09:30 GMT. Counselling services will be made available to the students affected by the collision once they are back at school. Leicestershire Police reported that a total of 16 passengers sustained minor injuries in the incident, which led to the closure of the northbound dual carriageway between the A607 near Cossington and the B676. The police force further stated that investigations into the matter are continuing. The St Thomas Aquinas Multi-Academy Trust, responsible for managing the school, confirmed that the bus had 37 pupils and two staff members aboard, en route to the Rosmini Centre. The trust also indicated that the bus collided with railings subsequent to the impact of the crash. Neil Lockyer, the chief executive officer for the trust, issued a statement saying: “We would like to thank the emergency services and school staff for their prompt and effective response and support in relation to this incident.” He continued, “Incidents like this are shocking and upsetting and consequently, students and staff have been able to access counselling support as they return to school over the next few days.” National Highways reported that the northbound carriageway was reopened by 14:00.
