A local authority is seeking a contractor for the demolition of a disused bowling alley located in a coastal town, as part of its broader plans for area regeneration. Specifically, Dorset Council has allocated up to £250,000 for a company to carry out the demolition of the MFA Bowl, situated on St Nicholas Street in Weymouth, which has remained unoccupied since April 2019. The council’s members approved the removal of the 18-lane establishment during April. The authority intends to clear the site and convert it into a temporary car park with 149 spaces, pending the finalization of future development proposals. Although specific future plans for the land were not disclosed when the decision was made in April, earlier proposals had included residential construction. Companies interested in undertaking the demolition work are invited by the authority to submit applications by 13 January 2025. The awarded contract is scheduled to commence on 10 February and conclude by 21 March. The council had previously indicated that the comprehensive cost for both the demolition of the site and the construction of the car park would probably amount to approximately £400,000.
