Northampton Saints director of rugby Phil Dowson expressed optimism that the team’s recent triumph over Bulls in South Africa could serve as a crucial foundation for their performance throughout the remainder of the season. Last season, Northampton Saints advanced to the semi-final of the European Champions Cup. The Saints’ 30-21 victory in Pretoria secured their position at the top of Champions Cup Pool 2 at the halfway point. The English champions will now redirect their attention to the Premiership, where they currently sit in eighth place. “From a point of view as regards to momentum for the rest of the season, this gives us a lot of confidence,” Dowson informed BBC Radio Northampton. He added, “When we get it right, we’re very, very competitive.” Dowson also remarked, “It’s been great for us to get away from the cold and the wet of the UK and to have a week together – we haven’t had a pre-season trip for a while. It’s been very valuable and for the players to put a performance out like that was incredible.” With a perfect 10 points from their initial two Champions Cup matches, Northampton is in a strong position to qualify for the knockout stages. Their upcoming Champions Cup schedule includes an away game against Stade Francais and a home fixture versus Munster in January. Prior to these European commitments, the team aims to improve its domestic form with Premiership matches against Saracens, Newcastle Falcons, and Bath. Having suffered defeats in three of their last four Premiership encounters, the Saints have dropped in the standings, now trailing the top-four spots by 10 points. Nevertheless, Dowson believes that defeating Bulls at altitude will significantly boost the team’s morale. “When you come to these tough environments, you find out a lot about yourselves,” Dowson stated. He continued, “We answered a lot of questions in terms of how we approach those challenges. We met them head-on and put in a performance that will hopefully push us on for the rest of the season.” He further commented, “It’s only Munster and Glasgow, I think, in knockout games, who have been able to get a win here.” Dowson concluded, “I think in these environments, you learn a lot about yourselves.”
