Travelers traversing the North Coast 500 have been invited to sign a pledge designed to foster responsible conduct. This tourist route, established in 2015, encompasses 516 miles of roads throughout the north Highlands. While the initiative is highlighted for its significance to the local economy, concerns regarding speeding on rural roads have emerged over time. North Coast 500 Ltd, the entity responsible for marketing the route, stated that its recently introduced visitor pledge aims to enhance awareness concerning responsible driving, parking, waste disposal, and patronage of local shops. According to the NC500 website, nearly 300 individuals have endorsed the pledge to date. North Coast 500 Ltd characterized its initiative as a “promise” dedicated to safeguarding the natural beauty, cultural heritage, and community spirit of the Highlands. Chairman David Hughes commented: “We’ve all seen an increase in visitor numbers over the last few years and it’s important not to downplay the importance these visitors have on the local economy. “We can’t control important infrastructure which supports the tourism industry, such as signage, rubbish/disposal facilities and parking.”However, by asking visitors to sign the pledge, we are asking tourists to be part of the solution, helping us maintain the North Highlands’ natural beauty for everyone to enjoy.” The NC500 commences and concludes in Inverness, with communities such as Ullapool, Golspie, and Thurso situated along its path. Marketed as the ultimate road trip, it guides visitors through some of Scotland’s most striking landscapes. These include the Flow Country Unesco World Heritage site and Assynt, an expansive region characterized by mountains and lochs. Driver conduct has previously been a point of concern. In 2018, Transport Scotland distributed leaflets to promote improved driving on single-track roads. Additionally, MSP David Stewart advocated in 2016 for a 10-year strategic plan for the route, aiming to ensure the roads could accommodate substantial traffic volumes. Other efforts targeting NC500 visitors have encompassed an initiative involving coffee cups to assist in litter reduction.
