A man was admitted to hospital in a critical state after being pinned beneath a fallen tree during Storm Darragh. The substantial cedar tree, which toppled in Portland Place West, Leamington Spa, on Saturday, also briefly trapped a woman and a young child who subsequently freed themselves, as reported by West Midlands Ambulance Service (WMAS). A spokesperson indicated that the pair received care from bystanders and sustained only minor injuries, but were transported to hospital as a precautionary measure. Ambulance and fire personnel collaborated to extricate the man, who had suffered severe injuries. He received initial treatment at the scene before being taken to a medical facility for further urgent care. WMAS stated that they received multiple 999 calls regarding the incident at 16:55 GMT. Earlier that day, at 12:42, ambulance crews were also dispatched to Myton Road, Warwick, where a man sustained “potentially serious injuries” after being struck by a fallen tree in a garden. In the evening, an ambulance responding to a 999 call was itself hit by a falling branch in Welford on Avon, causing its windscreen to crack. No individuals were harmed, and a second ambulance was assigned to the call, with the initial crew returning to base to swap vehicles, WMAS confirmed. Across England and Wales, tens of thousands of households remained without electricity, and flood alerts were active on Monday morning, in the aftermath of Storm Darragh. Train operators have also issued warnings that disruptions are expected to persist on the rail network.
