Ireland coach Andy Farrell has dismissed suggestions that Johnny Sexton’s consultancy position within the national squad is creating undue pressure on players vying to become his successor at fly-half. Sexton initially joined the coaching staff in this capacity for the ongoing autumn series, and Farrell has expressed a desire for this arrangement to extend into the upcoming Six Nations tournament. Sexton, who earned 118 caps during his 14-year international career which concluded after last year’s World Cup, is currently providing kicking instruction and player mentorship in his consultancy capacity during the present autumn series. Jack Crowley, Ciaran Frawley, and Sam Prendergast, a new addition to the squad, are all contending for the vacant number 10 fly-half position. Farrell conveyed his interest in Sexton’s contributions continuing through the forthcoming Six Nations championship. During that period, Simon Easterby will oversee the Ireland team as Farrell focuses on preparations for next summer’s British and Irish Lions tour of Australia. “That couldn’t be further from the truth,” Farrell asserted. This statement came in response to a query regarding whether Sexton’s involvement might hinder the development of Ireland’s three fly-halves, following the announcement of the squad for Saturday’s match against Fiji. He further elaborated, stating, “These guys love sharing their thoughts and more important, Johnny sharing his thoughts on them and all that he’s trying to do. “And they know that 100% that he’s there to help them and they appreciate that.” While Sexton is not currently involved with the Ireland team on match days, Farrell mentioned that “he could be down the line.” Farrell explained the current arrangement, saying, “At the minute, it’s when he can fit it in around his schedule as well. The consultancy part is now working really well.” He added that the current agreement is “just for this campaign but we’ll keep on talking. All the signs are good.” Twenty-one-year-old Prendergast is set to make his full debut this Saturday, having previously come on as a replacement for Crowley during the final 20 minutes of last week’s close victory against Argentina.
