A proposal has been lodged in Bradford for an interactive tower, measuring 15m (49ft) in height, designed to broadcast soundscapes featuring voices across various languages. This artistic creation, designated the Tower of Now, is slated to be developed by artist Saad Qureshi as an element of the UK City of Culture 2025 initiative. Should it receive approval, the sculpture is projected to be exhibited at the location of the erstwhile Hall Ings car park, spanning from February 2025 through March 2026, as indicated by planning documentation. A representative for the festival stated that the art piece is expected to “make a significant contribution to a programme of installations celebrating Bradford’s contribution to culture in the UK”. The submitted application characterizes the artwork as a “testament to the richness of cultural exchange”. Mr Qureshi, whose creations have been showcased in New York, London, and New Delhi, also previously developed an exhibition titled Something About Paradise for the Yorkshire Sculpture Park in 2020. A determination regarding the proposal is anticipated prior to the close of the current year, as reported by the Local Democracy Reporting Service. Efforts have been ongoing at the former Hall Ings car park location to convert it into an urban park. Bradford’s tenure as UK City of Culture is scheduled to feature over 1,000 performances and events, encompassing 365 commissions for artists, a sequence of significant arts festivals, and both national and international partnerships.
