Sophie Hediger, an Olympic snowboarder from Switzerland and a native of Zurich, passed away at the age of 26 after being caught in an avalanche, the Swiss-Ski federation announced on Tuesday. The incident, which occurred on Monday, involved the member of the Swiss national snowboard cross team at the mountain resort of Arosa. Walter Reusser, the Sport chief executive at Swiss-Ski, stated, “We are speechless, and our thoughts are with Sophie’s family, to whom we express our deepest condolences.” He added, “For the Swiss-Ski family, the tragic death of Sophie has cast a dark shadow over the Christmas period. We are immensely saddened.” Hediger had participated in the 2022 Winter Olympics in China and achieved two World Cup podium finishes during the 2023-24 season. The federation also indicated that additional information regarding her death would be kept private, a decision made in agreement with her family and partner.
