Peterborough City Council has announced that an estimated 13,000 children and young individuals within its area could qualify for £40 supermarket vouchers this Christmas. The council confirmed that children who receive free school meals during term time would also be issued these vouchers for the holiday period. Katy Cole, a Labour councillor and the cabinet member for children’s services, commented: “I’m delighted that once again we will be providing supermarket vouchers to help vulnerable families over Christmas.” These vouchers are scheduled for automatic distribution via text and email on December 19, leveraging school data and information held by the council. They must be redeemed by midday on January 24. Vouchers will be provided to families with children who meet income-related eligibility criteria. Additionally, some young people over the age of 16 may be eligible under specific conditions. Children who become eligible up to and including January 5, 2024, will also receive vouchers, provided an application has already been submitted. The city council further stated that individuals aged between 19 and 25 who possess an education, health and care plan (EHCP) and access either the bursary scheme or free school meals at their college are also eligible.
