A supervisor within the Federal Emergency Management Agency (Fema) has been terminated for directing staff assisting hurricane survivors to bypass residences exhibiting signs supporting Donald Trump. Deanne Criswell, the agency’s head, characterized the supervisor’s actions as “reprehensible,” stating that Fema “takes its mission to help everyone before, during and after disasters seriously.” Although Criswell’s statement on X did not specify when or where the incident occurred, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced that he had instructed the Division of Emergency Management to launch an investigation. DeSantis described the situation as “targeted discrimination” against Trump supporters in Florida. Fema personnel were in Florida last month, aiding residents in their recovery from Hurricane Milton, and were required to survey damage to homes to determine eligibility for federal aid. The Daily Wire reported on Friday that Fema staff were inspecting homes in Lake Placid when they received orders to skip properties displaying yard signs for the Republican candidate. Internal messages within a government system stated, “Trump sign no entry per leadership,” according to The Daily Wire. A whistleblower informed the outlet, “When we got there we were told to discriminate against people.” The whistleblower added, “It’s almost unbelievable to think that somebody in the federal government would think that’s okay.” Criswell, the Fema director, concluded her statement by asserting that she “will continue to do everything I can to make sure this never happens again.” Congressman James Comer indicated his intention to summon Criswell to appear before the House Oversight Committee hearing on 19 November. Additionally, Josh Hawley, a senator for Missouri, released a letter advocating for the prosecution of those involved, if deemed necessary. Florida was impacted by two significant hurricanes in the past couple of months. Hurricane Milton resulted in at least 24 fatalities and left millions of homes and businesses without power. Two weeks prior to Milton, Hurricane Helene made landfall, subsequently becoming the deadliest mainland U.S. storm since Katrina. Over 200 individuals were killed, with more than half of these deaths occurring in North Carolina, where entire communities were devastated.
