New parking charges have been implemented at Corby’s railway station, requiring commuters and visitors to pay up to 185% more. These revised rates were introduced following a public consultation conducted by North Northamptonshire Council (NNC). The Labour Member of Parliament for the constituency, Lee Barron, along with Corby Town Council, expressed opposition to these increases. The changes will see the daily parking fee for the car park escalate from £3.50 to £10.00. NNC stated that the updated rates are “in line with the lowest priced station parking charges in the area”. For longer durations, a weekly pass has increased from £14 to £30, and a monthly ticket now costs £100, an increase from £45. A three-month parking pass will be £270, up from £120, and an annual pass has risen from £390 to £1,000. Additionally, the council has introduced an off-peak rate option of £5, applicable for parking between 10:00 and 14:30 on weekdays, as well as throughout weekends and bank holidays. Mr. Barron, who serves as the MP for Corby and East Northamptonshire, had previously commented that the price hike would impose “a significant and sudden financial burden on users” of Corby station. Mark Pengelly, the leader of Corby Town Council, expressed concerns that beyond the increased expense for rail passengers, individuals might “park on the local streets causing congestion.” NNC stated that the adjustments have been “implemented following a public consultation earlier in the year”. The council further indicated that it had “considered all option very carefully” prior to introducing the increases.
