Luke Humphries, the reigning world champion and current world number one, experienced an unexpected loss to Rowby-John Rodriguez during the initial round of the Grand Slam of Darts in Wolverhampton, where he is defending his title. Humphries was overcome 5-3 by Austria’s Rodriguez in his inaugural group stage fixture. He is scheduled to compete against Mickey Mansell and James Wade within Group A; Mansell secured a 5-3 victory over Wade in their match. Concurrently, teenager Luke Littler made a swift Grand Slam debut, achieving a decisive 5-0 win against Keane Barry in Group F in slightly more than six minutes. Littler delivered a remarkable performance, recording an average of 112.16, which matched Phil Taylor’s tournament record for the highest average. Littler conveyed his ambition to Sky Sports, stating, “I wanted to make a statement. I’m here to win.” He further added, “I want to top the group. Everyone wants to. There’s a little bonus for finishing top, so get out of the group stage and then focus on the first-to-10 legs and hopefully go on and on.” Additionally, Michael van Gerwen, a three-time world champion, secured a 5-0 shutout victory over Noa-Lynn van Leuven of the Netherlands. In Van Gerwen’s Group G, Scotland’s Gary Anderson triumphed in the other fixture, defeating Ryan Joyce 4-1.
