Two police officers were assaulted, leading to the arrest of an 18-year-old man and two teenage girls. The event occurred around 17:00 GMT on Thursday on the Broadway in Thatcham. Thames Valley Police reported that one officer received hospital treatment for hand injuries and has since been released. The second officer sustained a fractured leg and continues to be hospitalized. The confrontation began subsequent to a teenager’s arrest, which followed reports of a moped being damaged in the vicinity. The 18-year-old man and a 16-year-old girl, both residents of Thatcham, were taken into custody on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker. A 15-year-old girl, also residing in Thatcham, was arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated public order and criminal damage. Both teenage girls have been granted police bail, while the man remains held in police custody. According to police, the assaults occurred after two neighbourhood officers were alerted by a member of the public who stated that his moped had been knocked over and damaged. The officers proceeded to arrest a teenager on suspicion of criminal damage, but the individual “became obstructive,” as stated by the force. The force further reported that “Another man became involved and an altercation ensued,” and noted that the teenager had subsequently been “de-arrested in connection with the incident of criminal damage.” Detective Inspector Bill Sykes commented: “This incident occurred outside a coffee shop and we are aware that members of the public witnessed this incident take place.” He issued an appeal for anyone possessing information to get in touch with the force.
