Wales international Jordan James, who has earned 14 caps since his debut in March 2023, made a summer move to French top-tier club Rennes, a decision Wales manager Craig Bellamy has described as a “smart move” despite the player’s limited appearances. James moved to Rennes after declining an offer to remain with Birmingham City, which had been relegated to League One the previous season. The 20-year-old, a consistent player for Wales under both Robert Page and current manager Bellamy, has not yet started a Ligue 1 match. His playing time has been restricted to three short substitute appearances, and he has not featured in a game since 21 September. Bellamy, who has selected James for the upcoming Nations League fixtures against Turkey and Iceland, stated, “I’ve had little conversations with JJ.” He elaborated on the challenges of relocating: “It’s always difficult for a kid or anyone who moves to a different country. It was the same with myself (in Belgium) the first couple of months.” Bellamy continued, “You’re picking up the language, but it’s just a different way of doing things, even simple things like the food.” He concluded his thoughts on James’s situation by saying, “JJ is in that period where he’s still a young kid. But he’s at a really good football club that develop young players and progress them and I see it as a smart move.” Bellamy acknowledged that James’s limited playing time must be frustrating, but he believes that “in his future development this will be a really good period” for the player. Bellamy further asserted, “I believe it will accelerate him and he’s going to be a beneficial player for Wales for a number of years.” Wales is scheduled to play group leaders Turkey in their second-to-last Nations League match on 16 November, followed by a home game against Iceland in Cardiff three days later. Securing two victories would result in Wales’ promotion to League A. Finishing as runners-up would qualify Wales for the play-offs in March, involving a two-legged contest against a third-placed team from the top tier.
