Scartho Cemetery Lodge, a Grade II-listed property situated off Scartho Road in Grimsby, has been listed for sale. The lodge, priced at £275,000, is being offered as a renovation project with the potential to be converted into a family residence. Its current owner, North East Lincolnshire Council, determined the property to be “surplus” to the authority’s operational needs. Constructed in 1888, the building has remained vacant for a period of 12 years. PHH Commercial is managing the sale of the property. According to the property listing, the four rooms located on the top floor are suitable for conversion into three bedrooms and a family bathroom. The listing further indicated that rooms on the ground floor could accommodate a kitchen and a WC. PHH Commercial characterized the property as a “rare opportunity” for ownership of a listed building, also noting it as an “opportunity to enhance the value of the dwelling by way of further refurbishment”. The Local Democracy Reporting Service reported that the property was recently removed from Historic England’s at-risk register following the completion of repairs. The listing stated that the completed works had “preserved the original features of the building in line with the [heritage] Listing”. In 2004, proposals to transform the lodge into a yoga and meditation center received approval; however, the planned works were never finished. The council’s cabinet had, in April 2021, agreed to allocate £467,000 from heritage funding for the restoration and reinstatement of the property. A spokesperson for the local authority confirmed that the property is “now surplus to the council’s operational requirements”. Historic England indicates that EW Farebrother of Grimsby constructed the lodge for the Grimsby Corporation Cemetery Committee.
