Employees working at recycling facilities throughout Essex have reported experiencing a “significant amount of abuse” while on duty. Essex County Council disclosed that an employee at one of its 21 locations received a threat to “watch yourself when you leave work.” A video released by the authority featured another staff member stating, “It makes me feel very, very depressed and very, very angry.” Peter Schwier, the council’s climate czar, mentioned that body worn cameras are being provided to staff to record instances of abuse. Employees have been sharing their personal experiences to underscore the impact these incidents have on their mental and emotional wellbeing. This situation arises 20 months after County Hall implemented new regulations mandating visitors to reserve a time slot prior to accessing recycling centres. Louis Stanley, who manages one of the facilities, reported that instances of abuse are recorded daily. Describing a verbal assault he endured, Mr Stanley stated: “It’s never left my mind, I feel the emotion now. It’s upsetting, really upsetting.” He added, “I’m being called all of these names… I wouldn’t dream of doing that to somebody who offended me, let alone to somebody who is trying to help me.” Additional recycling employees have recounted being subjected to phrases like “I hope your mum dies” and encountering obscene profanity. One individual commented: “It made me feel vulnerable, worried about my safety, my family’s safety.” Schwier, a Conservative councillor, affirmed the council’s zero-tolerance policy regarding abuse. He remarked: “Even one incident of verbal abuse is too much, because our staff are really good and they’re there to help.” He further explained: “We don’t want these incidents and we just wanted to highlight it because it’s slightly increased.”
