Hezbollah Names Naim Qassem as New Leader

Hezbollah has named its deputy secretary general as the organization’s new leader. Naim Qassem assumes the position previously held by Hassan Nasrallah, who was killed in an Israeli air strike in Beirut last month. Qassem is among the limited number of senior Hezbollah leaders still alive, following Israel’s elimination of most of the group’s leadership through a series of attacks. This appointment occurs amidst a recent escalation of conflict in Lebanon. Naim Qassem served as Hezbollah’s deputy secretary general for over 30 years and was one of the group’s most recognizable figures. Hezbollah stated that the Shura Council elected him, adhering to the organization’s regulations. While his current location is unknown, certain reports indicate he may have gone to Iran, Hezbollah’s primary backer. Born in Beirut in 1953, Qassem hails from a family originating in southern Lebanon. He was a founding member of Hezbollah and has delivered three televised speeches since Nasrallah’s death in an Israeli air strike. During one address, he stated that “a ceasefire was the only way Israel could guarantee the return of its residents to the north.” Upon announcing Qassem’s elevation, Hezbollah issued a statement characterizing him as “bearing the blessed banner in this march”. The statement additionally paid tribute to the deceased Nasrallah and other individuals who died in the conflict. The leadership of Hezbollah was anticipated to transfer to cleric Hashem Safieddine; however, on 22 October, it was disclosed that he had been killed in an Israeli air strike almost three weeks earlier. In response to Qassem’s appointment, Israel’s Defence Minister Yoav Gallant commented on social media, labeling it a “temporary appointment” and “not for long.” Israel has conducted air strikes throughout Lebanon in recent weeks, targeting what it identifies as Hezbollah’s operatives, infrastructure, and weaponry. On Monday night, the Israeli military executed air strikes in Lebanon’s eastern Bekaa Valley, a region known for Hezbollah’s significant presence. The Lebanese health ministry reported at least 60 fatalities and over 50 injuries. The Israeli military has not yet issued a statement regarding this attack. Israel initiated an offensive against Hezbollah following nearly a year of cross-border hostilities, which were triggered by the war in Gaza. Israel stated its objective was to guarantee the safe return of residents from border areas who had been displaced by Hezbollah’s rocket, missile, and drone attacks. According to Lebanon’s health ministry, over the last year, more than 2,700 individuals have died and nearly 12,500 have been injured in the country. During the identical timeframe, Hezbollah has launched thousands of rockets and drones at Israel, resulting in the deaths of at least 59 people in northern Israel and the occupied Golan Heights.
