Leaders of a business improvement district (BID) are urging companies to consider foregoing traditional Secret Santa events this Christmas in favor of contributing to food banks. This campaign has been spearheaded by the Stoke-on-Trent City Centre BID for the past five years. Sarah Thomas-Gordon, from the BID, stated, “We call it giving together, and it essentially means that we’re helping out those less fortunate in our communities.” The initiative also encompasses Festival Park and other areas within the city that are outside the BID’s designated zone. Donated food items are subsequently distributed to local charities and food banks. Last year, participating teams collected approximately 300 boxes, which amounted to about two tonnes of goods. These contributions included 200 tins of potatoes, 42 Christmas puddings, 28 teddy bears, and two bicycles. Ms Thomas-Gordon remarked, “It’s not just asking for food, we’re asking for anything really that would help those who are a bit more vulnerable, make their Christmas a bit brighter.” She further added, “It’s recognising that there are a lot of people in our city who do need help, and if we can maybe think less about ourselves a little bit and think about those who are less fortunate, I think it will go a really long way.” Secret Santa events are a common practice in many workplaces, where staff members who participate are randomly and secretly assigned a colleague for whom to purchase a Christmas gift. The BID intends to deliver empty collection boxes to local businesses during the first week of December, allowing employees time to fill them with donations before they are gathered and distributed in time for the holidays. The suggestion is for individuals to spend approximately £5-£10 on food and other donations. The BID is specifically requesting non-perishable items, particularly those suitable for a Christmas dinner. Sanitary products, other basic essentials, and toys in good condition are also welcomed. Companies interested in participating are asked to contact the BID through its website.
