Iran’s supreme leader has declared that the United States and Israel “will definitely receive a crushing response,” following an Israeli attack on Iran a week ago. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei delivered these remarks to students on Saturday, preceding the 45th anniversary of the 1979 takeover of the US embassy in Tehran. This warning emerges as Iran evaluates potential responses to an Israeli attack last month, which Iran reported resulted in the deaths of four soldiers. That Israeli action was itself a retaliation for an Iranian missile strike against Israel earlier in October. The Iranian attack had been launched in response to the assassinations of leaders from Hezbollah and Hamas – armed groups supported by Iran that are engaged in conflict with Israel – as well as a high-ranking Iranian commander. Khamenei asserted that Iran’s adversaries, specifically Israel and the US, “will definitely receive a crushing response to what they are doing to Iran, the Iranian people, and the resistance front.” Iran’s “axis of resistance” refers to a coalition of groups supported by Tehran, comprising Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Houthis in Yemen, and various well-armed factions in Iraq and Syria. A majority of these groups have been classified as terrorist organizations by certain Western nations. Reports indicate that Israel caused significant damage to Iranian air defenses and missile capabilities during its attack on 26 October, a claim Iran has not acknowledged. Israel considers Iran to be the primary supporter of the Hamas attacks that resulted in approximately 1,200 fatalities on 7 October last year. Additionally, over 250 individuals were abducted and taken as hostages into the Gaza Strip. Subsequently, Israel initiated a large-scale operation in Gaza, where more than 43,300 people have been killed, as reported by the territory’s Hamas-administered health ministry. In September, Israel also commenced an offensive against Hezbollah in Lebanon, following nearly a year of cross-border hostilities and rocket launches by Hezbollah, which began in support of Palestinians the day after the Hamas attacks. Israel stated its objective was to guarantee the secure return of tens of thousands of residents from northern Israel who had been displaced by the conflict. According to Lebanese authorities, over 2,800 individuals have been killed in Lebanon since that time, with 1.2 million others displaced. Israeli authorities report that Hezbollah’s rocket, drone, and missile attacks in northern Israel and the occupied Golan Heights have resulted in the deaths of over 60 people. The relationship between the US and Iran has remained unstable since 4 November 1979, when Iranian demonstrators took more than 50 US diplomats and embassy personnel captive, initiating a hostage crisis that extended for 444 days.
