The legal proceedings for two individuals charged with the unlawful felling of the internationally recognized Sycamore Gap tree have been postponed because one of the accused is ill. This tree, whose value exceeded £620,000 and was under the ownership of the National Trust, was found fallen across Hadrian’s Wall in Northumberland on September 28, 2023. The highly photographed natural landmark had previously received the designation of England’s best tree and gained global recognition following its appearance in the 1991 movie Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Daniel Graham, 39, and Adam Carruthers, 32, both residents of Cumbria, have pleaded not guilty to charges of criminal damage. Their trial was scheduled to take place at Newcastle Crown Court. During the court proceedings, it was stated that Mr. Graham was unwell and therefore unable to participate in the trial. Judge Mrs. Justice Lambert commented that it was “highly desirable” and “strongly” in the public interest for both men to be tried concurrently. A subsequent hearing is scheduled for January to establish a new court date.
